“For God so loved the world . . .“

                                     John 3:16

Jesus

Not for pleasure, not for fun.

God in man, mission clear.

The Passion over, His job is done.

In poem, hymn, and song,

We praise His name, our hearts laid bare.

Not for pleasure, not for fun.

Forty days in desert sun.

He scorned temptation, faced down fear.

Trials over, His task is done.

He spread the Word, His sermons stung,

The high and mighty chose not to hear.

Not for pleasure, not for fun.

Jesus was an only Son.

He braved the cross, the soldier’s spear.

Not for pleasure, not for fun.

Sins redeemed, our faith stays strong.

His light shines on, we dry our tears.

Not for pleasure, not for fun,

His pain is over, His job is done.

Paul Van Peenen lives in Eugene, Oregon, and his work has been published

in Ekstasis, Time of Singing, Autumn Sky, and Woodcrest Magazine, among
